What to Do Before Your Dumpster Rental Arrives

What to do before your dumpster rental arrives

We’re all spending much more time at home these days. Perhaps you’ve been doing some cleaning and realize you have a lot of stuff in your basement, attic, or garage that you don’t use and want to get rid of.

If that’s the case, renting a dumpster is a great idea for you. No matter where you live in the Toronto area, we can help you with a dumpster rental.

Dumpster rentals are both easy and convenient. We’ll deliver one to your driveway, lawn or street; all you have to do is fill it, and you’re set to go. That being said, there are still a few steps you should take before your rental bin arrives:

  1. Determine the best location for us to place your bin.
  2. Ensure that the location for your dumpster is accessible.
  3. Get your waste ready to put into the bin.
  4. Ensure that your waste does not contain anything we do not dispose of (e.g., hazardous materials).
  5. Ensure you have gotten your street occupation permit from the city if the dumpster is going on the street.

Determine the Best Location

You will be able to dispose of your waste faster if you choose a central location for the bin to be placed. You won’t have to spend as much time lugging waste if it’s easy to access from anywhere on your property.

You need to have available at least a 8-foot wide space for us to place your bin properly. If you do not have a driveway or other space large enough on your property, we can place it on your lawn or on the street.

If you want the dumpster bin placed on the street, you must ensure that you have the necessary street occupation permit. If you do have a driveway or other area on your property we can use, we will put wooden planks (free of charge) underneath the dumpster bin to help protect your driveway.

Ensure the Location is Accessible

Before we arrive to drop off your dumpster, it’s important to ensure that the location you want us to place it is clear and accessible.

If we’re putting the bin in your driveway, find a location to park your cars temporarily. You don’t want us to drop off your dumpster and suddenly realize that it is blocking one of your cars. Also, clear anything else from the driveway like bikes and toys.

If we’re placing the bin on the road in front of your place, try to find a way to reserve the spot so no one parks in it. If your street allows street parking, talk to your neighbours in advance to let them know where you expect the rental dumpster to be put and how long it will be there. It’s important to note that even if your street allows street parking, you still require a street occupation permit.

Have Your Waste Ready

Do as much prep work as you can ahead of time. Organize your waste by type, as you may need more than one dumpster depending on the kind of garbage you have. As well, put the waste as close as you can to where the dumpster location will be.

There are two benefits to having your waste organized ahead of time:

  1. It will enable you to fill your dumpster(s) quicker.
  2. You won’t go over the included rental time which can increase rental cost.

Avoid Disposing Hazardous Waste

While we accept many different types of waste—everything from fridges to gravel—there are certain types of hazardous waste we don’t take. For example, we don’t accept things like paint, solvents, gas tanks, and oil.

Once you have all of your waste ready, take a good look through to make sure that only acceptable materials are in your waste pile. Hazardous materials must be disposed of properly at your local landfill.

How can Scarborough Disposal help me?

We know it’s not always easy to declutter, so we want to help make the disposal process as simple as possible. Just follow the following four steps:

  1. Choose your bin size. You can select from a 4-yard bin to a 40-yard bin (if you’ve got a lot of stuff to discard).
  2. Phone us or order online. If you know exactly what you need and don’t have any questions, you can order a bin online. If you aren’t sure what you need, call us at 647-905-5145, and we’ll be happy to answer your questions.
  3. Confirm your dropoff and pickup time. We’ll make sure that your bin arrives on time and is in the location you requested. When you’re done, we’ll be there at pickup time to remove the bin. Just let us know if you need more time. You will have to put all the waste into the bin yourself; we do not enter people’s homes or help fill the bins.
  4. We take your waste away and dispose of it in an environmentally-friendly manner.

The Takeaway

Now you know the four main steps to take before your rental dumpster arrives:

  1. Find the best place for us to place your rental dumpster.
  2. Make sure we can access the location for your bin.
  3. Get everything you want to put into the bin organized and ready for disposal.
  4. Double-check that you don’t have any hazardous waste in your disposal pile.
