Renting a disposal bin? Here are 5 tips on how to protect your driveway

Whether you’re doing some decluttering or making a major change to your home, it’s very handy to have an easy way to get rid of your waste. Renting a disposal bin is a great option to save yourself endless trips to the dump. With a disposal bin, you’ve got a handy place to put your waste as soon as you’re ready to dispose of it.

Disposal bins can be quite heavy, and even more so when they are full of garbage. Therefore, it’s important to take precautions to make sure that your driveway is protected from damage.

At Scarborough Disposal, we pride ourselves on our professionalism and want to make sure that you don’t get any surprises when renting a waste bin. We’ve got some great tips for protecting your driveway from harm:

  1. Lay a tarp down to protect it from leaks.
  2. Place plywood for the rental dumpster to rest on.
  3. Once your disposal bin is in place, do not try to move it.
  4. Make sure you fill the bin properly.
  5. Have your waste bin placed in the street instead of your driveway.

Lay a Tarp on Your Driveway

One of the easiest ways to protect your driveway from bin damage is to place a tarp on it. This will act as a protective barrier on your driveway, helping to prevent stains if liquid does end up leaking out of your dumpster.

Even if you are not disposing of waste that potentially leaks, it’s still a good idea to use a tarp. If it rains on your disposal bin, and you have any items inside that could cause stains, the rain could then leak out or overflow onto your driveway and damage it.

Place Plywood on Your Driveway

Another great way to prevent bin damage to your driveway is to put plywood on top. Our bins are made of heavy-duty metal, which is great for ensuring that they can carry heavy loads of waste. However, this also means they are much harder and more resilient than a concrete, stone, brick, or asphalt driveway.

Plywood makes a great buffer to protect your driveway from chips, ruts, or dents. Placing wide boards of plywood will help distribute the weight of the bin and its contents easily as well.

Do Not Move the Dumpster Bin

Another way to avoid damage is to make sure you will not need to move the bin once it’s in place. Before the bin arrives, make sure that you get your car and any other items out of the driveway. This leaves more room, as well as ensuring you can access your car while the bin is in place.

If you try to move the bin on your own after it’s in place, you could damage both the bin and driveway.

Do Not Overfill the Dumpster Bin

Another way to avoid damage is to make sure you don’t overfill the waste bin. Here are some tips:

  1. Find out the weight limit of your bin. If you are putting in lighter items, this will likely not be an issue. If you have heavy construction or landscaping waste, then you will have to be careful not to exceed the weight limit to avoid damage.
  2. Fill your dumpster bin with the contents evenly distributed. This will avoid putting too much weight in one area of the bin, which can cause it to shift and damage your driveway.
  3. Don’t fill your dumpster above the fill line. If you do, items could fall out and damage the surrounding area.

Have Us Place the Disposal Bin on the Street

A good way to avoid worrying about bin damage to your driveway is to have us place it on the street instead. However, you will be required to contact your municipal government to obtain a street occupation permit.

It will be more work upfront to arrange to place the bin on the street, but this is an excellent way to ensure that no bin damage occurs to your driveway or your property.
