A Step by Step Guide to Renting a Dumpster

A step by step guide to renting a dumpster

If you have never rented a dumpster before, you may not be familiar with how this process works. The following step-by-step dumpster guide will highlight everything you need to do to prepare for the rental and make sure that it all goes according to plan.

Why is renting a dumpster necessary?

Renting a dumpster can be advantageous for several reasons. They are commonly used for house cleanouts, remodelling, spring cleaning, home decluttering, moving, yard waste removal, new construction and window replacements.

Now that you are familiar with why people rent dumpsters, here is our step-by-step guide for renting a dumpster.

Step 1: The Planning Stage

Before beginning your home improvement project, you’ll want to identify what you need to complete it successfully. For instance, if you are cleaning out your garage, you’ll want to arrange to rent a dumpster that will be big enough for all the junk you want to dispose of.

The more time you put into planning, the smoother your operation will run. Go to each area that you plan on remodelling and determine exactly what items you want to throw out. When you have this information, it is much easier for the junk removal company to provide accurate quotes and ideal solutions for your requirements.

However, most rental companies know that you may not be 100% accurate in your estimates, especially for extensive projects, but having a general idea can go a long way.

In the first stage of the dumpster rental process, you’ll want to make sure you have covered these initial tasks:

  1. Put all your construction debris and waste in one spot so you can get a better sense of your junk removal needs.
  2. Do your research on junk removal companies in your neighbourhood and find out which ones have an excellent reputation in the community.
  3. Once you have decided on a company, speak to a representative to schedule and confirm a delivery time.
  4. Work with this junk removal company to determine what size dumpster will work best for your project’s scope.

Be sure to put your trust in a qualified dumpster rental company, like Scarborough Disposal, because they can help you pick the right dumpster size.

The next step to a seamless dumpster rental experience is ensuring your location is ready for the dumpster’s arrival.

Step 2: Prepare for the Arrival of Your Rental Bin

Once you have organized and planned accordingly for your dumpster, you’ll want to ensure that you are prepared for its arrival. First, once you set a date, create a calendar reminder and alert on your phone.

First, sort your items in organized piles, and schedule your contract to come the same day as the dumpster drop-off.

Before the junk removal team drops off the rental bin, you’ll want to make sure there are no obstacles in their way. In essence, you’ll need to prepare your driveway.

You’ll want to make sure that your trash bin is driveway friendly, like the ones we provide at Scarborough Disposal. You’ll also want to move your cars into street parking nearby so that nothing will obstruct the drop-off.

Many junk removal companies will give you a head’s up and call approximately 15 minutes before they get there. Since you’ll have adequate time to prepare, you can ensure everything is ready to go and that nothing will get in the way of your drop-off.

Plus, since most companies never enter a home or do not lift or assist with loading the bin, preparing properly also benefits you when you haul the container yourself.

Step 3: Fill Up Your Bin

Once the rental bin has arrived and you have placed it in a convenient location, it’s time to fill it up with the belongings you no longer need.

You’ll want to be strategic with how you load the bin. Use the space to your advantage by being as organized as possible and determining how you can utilize the space.

You’ll also want to ensure that you do not overload the bin, as doing so will inhibit the bin rental company from being able to pick it up. You want to aim to have the bin loaded level, or below, the top of the bin.

Step 4: Schedule Your Bin Pickup

Once you have filled up your bin and are fully ready to go, the last step is simple: call the dumpster removal company to schedule your pickup. Some individuals pick a set time in advance for pickup; the preference is up to the person.

We’re glad our article was able to provide you (and your brother) with valuable information!

My brother recently invited me over for dinner last Monday to which I saw a heap of junk on his front yard, as he was getting his house renovated. He told me he was looking into dumpster rentals so the workers could throw the renovation junk into it. I offered to look into as well and luckily for him, I found your amazing article here which has provided me with some valuable information. My favorite part has to be where you highlighted to use the space to your advantage by being as organized as possible and determining how you can utilize the space. This is a good point you brought up here, one I’m sure those interested in these rentals will be glad to be mindful of. Thanks for this! I’ll be sure to send this over to him later!

I found it helpful when you said that you should find out which junk removal company has an excellent reputation in the community when you research. This is something that I will consider since I am planning to rent a dumpster. Our house was renovated to improve the kitchen and bathroom’s space and look, and we need to have all the debris and waste materials to be hauled away properly. Since we want to find the best dumpster rental company, we will do your tips.

    Hi Ava,

Yes, not only can it be dangerous for a driver to haul an overloaded bin, not to mention illegal, it also makes it difficult for the driver to properly tarp the bin. We always recommend going with a slightly larger bin to ensure all items will fit securely. It also reduces your chances of having to pay for a second bin if it doesn’t all fit.

I like that you pointed out that you should not overload the bin to make sure that it will be easy to get picked up by the company. This is something that I will remember because I am planning to rent a dumpster. Our house was recently renovated, and we need to have all the debris disposed of. We will be sure to choose a dumpster of the right size.

It’s good to know that it’s smart to plan out when you need a dumpster and for what kind of job. My husband wants to rent a dumpster to help clean up our yard. I think it would be smart for him to talk to the company about which kind would work best for him.
